The term 'Black' does not refer to skin colour.  The emphasis is on the common experience and determination of people from diverse communities to oppose the effects of racism.

Sussex Police is an organisation that gathers its strength from working with and supporting

the many diverse communities of Sussex.

In support of this, in 2001 the Sussex Black Police Association was formed to assist in

    • Improving the working environment of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) staff by protecting
the rights and interests of those employed within Sussex Police.

    • Promoting racial harmony and equality of service to the black and ethnic minority communities of Sussex, thereby assisting Sussex Police in delivering a fair and equitable service to all members of the community.

The Sussex Black Police Association officially launched on 5th December 2002 , the 39th BPA set up across the country.
It is a non-political organisation and does not seek to supersede any other statutory body or staff association
.

Over the last five years the SBPA has grown in strength and number and has become a valued
partner, working alongside the Police Federation and Unison, to ensure equality within the work place.
